A good day starts with a full breakfast. Have you ever heard this before? Probably. But were you told what exactly a full breakfast consists of? Perhaps not, unless you devoured the latest Canadian food guide. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it. Here are the ingredients for a perfect breakfast. To your toasters!
Complex carbs: the building block of a winning breakfast
For a perfect breakfast, you should first put a good portion of complex carbs on your plate. What does it eat in winter from complex carbohydrates? Complex carbs are the main components of bread, cereals and rice. “So if I eat some good white bread, I’ll get my portion of complex carbs,” you ask? Not quite. The famous white bread contains very little of this type of carbohydrate. It’s better to keep it off your morning menu because it will make you hungry quickly after buttering it. On the other hand, whole-wheat and wholegrain bread produce a weak insulin response. They help you feel full over a longer period of time. So leave the neon-coloured cereals in the cupboard and go for cereals that are rich in complex carbs. If you want to satisfy your carb cravings, we offer pancakes, French toast, waffles and even a great selection of breakfast pizzas (yes, yes!) in our restaurant.
Fats to the rescue of your morning spread
Next, no perfect breakfast would be complete without an adequate fat intake. “Okay, but I’m on a diet because I’m trying to lose weight before summer.” The body needs fat to function properly. All you have to do is measure the amount you consume. We talked about carbohydrates above, well, fat slows down carbohydrate absorption. The result: you feel fuller for longer by eating fats for breakfast. So, while the toast is toasting, take out a little butter or margarine to spread. Almond, cashew, peanut and avocado butter also spread wonderfully, and they provide an ideal source of fat. For a good dose of fat (but not too much), Mikes recommends trying our Saint-Raymond cheese dishes. You will love this semi-firm surface-ripened cheese from our region.
The winning trio of any balanced breakfast
Carbs, fats, and what else? Proteins, of course! These three form a winning trio that works hard to keep you healthy. In this regard, you can pour yourself a nice glass of milk, which contains a good amount of protein, or serve yourself a delicious yogurt or a portion of cottage cheese. The advantage of these three foods is that they are rich in calcium. Are you intolerant of cow’s milk? No problem, soy milk works just as well and is available in many flavours. Protein also means meat. Where can you find meat in Mikes breakfast? Pretty much everywhere. Bacon, ham, eggs, cretons, sausages. We offer you a myriad of choices.
Put a cherry on top of the perfect breakfast
Are you starting to feel full? Open your mouth wide because it’s time to put the cherry on top of our perfect breakfast. Literally. Fruits are a real little gold mine of vitamins. They add a perfect sweet touch to start the day on the right foot (or on the right plate). Orange, kiwi, banana, melon. They’re all good. The more fruit on your plate, the more your health will thank you. So enjoy them with a big appetite.
